Image Wisely Evolves to Promote Cultures of Safety in Medical Imaging

Image Wisely, a joint initiative of the American College of Radiology® (ACR®), Radiological Society of North America (RSNA®), American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) and American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), recently expanded its scope to provide content and educational resources across more elements of safety in medical imaging.

Image Wisely will now create and disseminate additional resources and educational content for Magnetic Resonance (MR) and contrast material safety, in addition to existing and future resources that advance safety in ionizing medical radiation.

“Image Wisely was originally created in 2010 to focus exclusively on radiation safety during medical imaging, in the aftermath of several high-profile accidents in medical radiological practice. As the practice of radiology and medical physics evolved, we’ve fortunately decreased adverse events, and worked proactively to systemically improve safety and promote cultures of safety across radiology and the healthcare continuum,” said Image Wisely Co-Chair Eric Gingold, PhD, ACR Co-Chair of Image Wisely.

Each year, imaging professionals, referring practitioners, imaging facilities, medical associations and educational programs are encouraged to pledge to Image Wisely. In pledging, individuals and groups demonstrate their commitment to safe imaging and opt-in to receive valuable resources and updates.

“We are proud to modernize Image Wisely in a way that reflects the evolution of modern practice and holistically considers all aspects of safety in adult medical imaging,” said Diana Litmanovich, MD, RSNA Co-Chair of Image Wisely. “We look forward to sharing new developments, academic publications, dose exhibits, safety cases and video and social media content that will promote safety in medical imaging.”
