Image Wisely, a joint initiative of ACR, RSNA, ASRT and AAPM,
provides information to the medical community to promote safety in medical imaging.

About Us

Image Wisely aims to raise awareness and provide up-to-date educational resources for radiology professionals and referring clinicians regarding the safe use of adult medical imaging. The goals of Image Wisely are to provide information on:

  • Advancing safety in adult medical imaging
  • Optimizing ionizing radiation techniques to clinical indication and patient size, and
  • Monitoring radiation dose indices to enable comparison to established reference levels

The American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America originally formed the Joint Task Force on Adult Radiation Protection to address concerns about the surge of public exposure to ionizing radiation from medical imaging. The Joint Task Force collaborated with the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists to create the Image Wisely campaign in 2010 with the objective of lowering the amount of radiation used in medically necessary imaging studies and eliminating unnecessary procedures. In 2023, Image Wisely expanded its charge to encompass additional aspects of safety in adult medical imaging, to include ionizing radiation, MR, and contrast material safety.
